Michelada

Despite seeing Michelada available all over Mexico we did not try this until the very last day. And what better place to try it than the beautiful Laguna Bacalar.

We order two and what we receive certainly looks the part. Two glasses, the rims topped with chilli salt, within the glasses there is cool ice and hugging the bottom is a strange brown looking mixture. This is served accompanied by two Coronas to mix.

Before I had no idea what a Michelada contained but common ingredients include, lime juice, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and tomato juice. There does not look to be tomato juice and I doubt there’s teriyaki sauce. But it does look like there could be Worcestershire or soy.

We fill the glass with the beer and give it a swirl with the straw, it certainly looks refreshing in the hot sun. The taste, well it tastes like Mexico in a glass. The sour taste of lime, over the top salt topped off with the familiar taste of chilli. All washed down with a watery beer and ice.

In usual circumstances ice and beer is a tragedy, a bit of lime is okay, maybe chilli, but no way salt, certainly not this amount, it has an uncanny resemblance to sea water. I can’t decide whether it is good or bad, perhaps that’s a quality in itself. However this strange combination is interesting and I will certainly be finishing the glass.
