So we have finally made it to the Yucatan Peninsula, our first stop is the cultural capital of the state Merida. Originally home to 5 Mayan pyramids which were dismantled by the Spanish conquistadors. The limestone blocks were then reused to build many of the colonial buildings standing today. Not surprisingly the city does feel like you could have stepped off the bus in Spain.

The town is a popular spot for backpackers as it is close to a number of sites and activities including, visits to Cenotes, the ruins of Uxmal or to go flamingo watching. Out of the 4 nights we spend here we didn’t participate in any of these. Instead we choose to take advantage of the hostels pool and hammocks. As well as the free cooking, salsa and yoga classes. Add in several bottles of Corona and the 4 nights quickly passed.

We left feeling relaxed, stretched, suntanned and thankfully with a new laptop.
