After the cider fight on New Year’s Eve it was difficult to wash the smell of this sickly sweet cider from our hair. Bought at around $1.50 a bottle this sugary cider with 4.9% alcohol would look more comfortable in the hands of the hobos rather than the young trendy crowds gathered on the streets on NYE.
However, it did serve its purpose well. Being chosen as the people of Montevideo’s weapon of choice for their street party. We had been told there was a water fight but clearly throwing cider at each other was more fun.
Bought cold it was quite drinkable in the midday heat, but once warm the only thing it was useful for was poring over the nearest persons head. Literally thousands of these bottles were purchased on New Year’s Eve and the green bottles filled every bin and lined the streets.
The next day as we walked around the aftermath you could still catch the aroma in the air as the pavements had absorbed gallons upon gallons of La Gijonese. After being covered head to toe in it, it may be a while before we can face drinking a sweet cider again.
