How to choose a name for your travel blog

Coming up with a name for a blog can be extremely difficult. Do you go with something that is;

  1. Clear, concise and easy to remember.
  2. Something which is unique, quirky and represents your personality.
  3. Just go for whichever domain name is available at the time that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to run.

If I’m honest, I think our blog tile is a mixture of all the above.

I had originally put ‘Travel Without a Coat’ on the table, as I thought this was a cleaver, quirky idea which picked up on the stereotypical view that people from Newcastle don’t wear coats. I also thought that it fitted nicely with our dream to get away from the cold damp weather of the UK. Although some people agreed with me there was a lot that didn’t get it, so this I idea was swiftly vetoed.

Next, we produced the following list of blog titles;

TravelFit – Free Independent Travel
The Open Road– Taking the Road Less Traveled
Barmy Backpackers – Two Geordies Let Loose
Moaning Backpacker

Yes, that’s right, at one point, after a few too many glasses of wine, we had actually considered calling our blog ‘Earth Warriors’!! Thankfully the domain name was already taken. After much debate we finally settled on Intrepid Nomads, which, conveniently, also was also a cheap, available website.

But what does Intrepid Nomads actually mean?

Intrepid - Fearless; adventurous (often used for rhetorical or humorous effect)

Nomads - A member of a people that travels from place to place to find fresh pasture for its animals and has no permanent home
- A person who does not stay long in the same place; a wanderer:
(Oxford Dictionary, 2015)

Well we certainly aren’t fearless and we don’t own animals. However, there are undoubtedly, some true reflections of our personalities in these definitions.
And on the positive side, even if it is just used for ‘rhetoric or humorous effect’, it’s only costing us £2.99 a month to run.
