Bronco in Cancun

So we are in Cancun, other backpackers say it not very good but we thought we knew best. A quick look in the local bars and the drinks are so much more expensive than the rest of Mexico. You can get a room for a night elsewhere in Mexico for the price you pay here for a cocktail or two beers.

As budget backpackers this is not acceptable. So we go to a local Mexican shop and find the cheapest drink on the shelf. It’s called “Bronco – Destilado De Cana” and it costs only 13 Pesos, about 50 pence. You can pay more for a bottle of water.

It’s in a small plastic bottle, perhaps it looks more like a bottle of cheap pop then an alcoholic drink. It’s 25% alcohol and you get 500ml. I feel this would be at the top of an alcoholic’s daily wish list.
On the front there is a picture of a horse running through what looks like grass. “Destilado De Cana” loosely translates to distilled from cane, what we are about to drink is distilled from sugar cane molasses. Put another way its moonshine!

This is not a drink to be drank straight. We opt for a high sugar lemonade as a mixer in the hope to sweeten the taste. The bottle of pop happens to cost more money.

Its smells a bit like cheap whiskey mixed with paint stripper. However when the mixer is added it tastes damn good. It’s easy enough to drink and for the price is an absolute bargain, however in the morning our livers might have a different opinion.
