When backpacking through South America Peru never seems to be missed from the travellers itinerary. The reasons are easy to see, as this country offers excellent cuisine, canyons and culture, not to mention, iconic destinations such as the world renowned Machu Picchu. For adventure seekers there is an array of world class trekking and adrenaline fuelled options available and for the culture vultures there are many museums and Inca relics. There really is something for everyone to be found in this vibrant country.

In total we spent 20 days in Peru choosing to visit Cuzco, Arequipa, Ica and Lima.

 

Typical Costs

 

Hotels/Hostels: Dorm beds can be found for as cheap as PS$25-50. Doubles with on-suites including breakfast can be found for around PS$80-150.

Food: Food is a lot more diverse and flavoursome in Peru. Local dishes can be found in markets for around PS$5-10. In the tourist areas there are many upmarket restaurants available which can be expensive, however it is still possible to find local restaurants offering a set 3 course menu for around PS$15.

Beer: Around PS$10-25 for a large beer in restaurants.

Transport


The busses are the cheapest way to get around. Generally, we found the more you pay the better quality the bus will be.

 

  • Bus Cuzco to Pisac – PS$4pp
  • Bus Cusco to Arequipa (full cama/bed) 10hrs – PS$110pp
  • Arequipa to Ica (semi cama/bed) 12hrs - PS$82
  • Ica to Lima 4hrs – PS$31pp
